Google has launched a self-service repair programme for Pixel smartphones
Google has created a self-service repair scheme, allowing Pixel users to repair their phones themselves. Google announced a partnership with iFixit, an online repair community, for its Genuine Pixel Parts Program.
It will offer step-by-step phone repair instructions, as well as real Pixel smartphone spare parts. Starting later this year, the components will be available for purchase at ifixit.com for Pixel 2 through Pixel 6 Pro, as well as future Pixel models, in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the European Union.
According to a Google blog post, the whole spectrum of spare components for typical Pixel phone repairs, such as batteries, new screens, and cameras, will be offered either singly or in iFixit Fix Kits.
Screwdriver bits and spudgers will be included in these packages. In regions where Pixel phones are available, Google already provides repairs by authorised technical specialists.
Meanwhile, iFixit claims that the Pixel repair kits will include an iOpener, replacement pre-cut adhesive, iFixit opening picks (set of six), iFixit opening tool, suction handle, angled tweezers, precision bit driver with integrated SIM eject tool, and 4mm precision bits appropriate for the specific Pixel phone.
It also claims that the step-by-step Google Pixel phone repair guidelines are now available for all Pixel phones up to and including the Pixel 5, and that they are working on guides for the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro.
Google has already collaborated with firms such as Acer and Lenovo on the Chromebook repair initiative, which aims to "helping schools find information about repairable Chromebooks and develop in-house repair programmes."
Chrome OS Flex, released by Google, allows education and corporate users to reuse outdated Mac or Windows workstations to run a version of Chrome OS alongside their Chromebooks.
