Google Chrome 100 Is Here to Wreck the Internet

Google Chrome version 100 has been officially published, and this might be an issue.

Google warned earlier this month that the rollout of Chrome and Firefox at the same time might damage some websites unless web developers account for three-digit version numbers.

The business intends to include Chrome's version number as 99 in the User-Agent string, which is used to convey browser versions, operating systems, and other information to websites. In the minor version section, it will report the proper number, 100. Even so, it is possible that this will cause issues.

"Chrome is also running experiments to ensure that reporting a three-digit value in the minor version part of the string does not result in breakage," adds the firm, "since the minor version in the Chrome User-Agent string has reported 0 for a very long time."

Google said Chrome 100 will be available "will roll out over the coming days/weeks" for Windows, Mac, and Linux. So, if a slew of websites go down in the coming month, that's why.

Meanwhile, Chrome 100 arrives 14 years after the initial version was launched in September 2008. According to StatCounter, it is now the most used browser in the world, with a market share of 65 percent. No other browser has even a tenth of a percent market share.

The open-sourced Chromium project at the heart of Chrome has also grown in popularity, serving as the foundation for Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Brave, and other browsers.
